ஜிம் எலியட் Jim Elliot

கலாச்சாரம் கடந்து தொலைதூரத்தில் செய்யப்படும் மிஷனெரிப் பணி என்றாலும் சரி, அருகில் உள்ளோருக்கு இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் அன்பைச் சொல்லும் சுவிசேஷப்பணி என்றாலும் சரி, இரண்டிற்கும் இளைஞர்களின் இளம் தோள்கள் அவசியம் தேவை. இளம் தரிசன வீரர் ஜிம் எலியட், அவ்வாறு தரிசனத்தோடு, அழிந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் மால்தோ சமுதாயத்தை மாற்ற தன்னையே கோதுமை மணியாக அர்ப்பணித்தவர். இன்றும் அதன் விளைச்சலை நாம் கண்கூடாக மால்தோ மலையில் பார்க்க முடியும்.

முன்னோடி ஊழியர் சகோதரர் பேட்ரிக் ஜாஷ்வா - சகோதரி சுஷிலா பேட்ரிக் தம்பதியினருக்கு பிறந்த இரண்டாவது மகன் ஜிம் எலியட். எக்வேடார் பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்த ஆக்கா மக்கள் மத்தியில் சுவிசேஷத்தை அறிவிக்கச் சென்று வீர மரணம் அடைந்த ஜிம் எலியட் என்ற அமெரிக்க மிஷனெரியுடைய வாழ்க்கையின் தாக்கத்தினால் இந்த மகனுக்கு ஜிம் எலியட் என பெற்றோர் பெயர் வைத்தார்கள். ஆண் பிள்ளைக்கு அழகு தரும் குறும்பு, மரமானாலும் மலையானாலும் ஏறிப் பார்க்கத் துடிக்கும் சுறுசுறுப்பு, அதிர வைக்கும் ஆர்ப்பரிப்பு, புதியவைகளை கற்பது, எதையும் துருவி ஆராய்வது என வாழ்ந்தவர். அவரைச் சுற்றி அனைத்து தரப்பு வயதினரும் எப்பொழுதும் உண்டு. மத்தியாஸ் மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளி, தூய பவுல் மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளி, சென்னை கிறிஸ்தவ கல்லூரி, புனித இதயக் கல்லூரி என பல கல்வி நிலையங்களுக்கும் சென்று MSW முதுகலைப்பட்டம் பெற்றவர். தன் உடன் பிறந்தவர்களிடம் மிகவும் வித்தியாசமானவர். பண்பில், பழக்கத்தில், மற்றவர்களை கவர்ந்து ஈப்பதில், நட்பு கொள்வதில் மிகவும் மாறுபட்டவராகவே இருந்தார். அவருக்குள் ஏராளமான திறமைகள் புதைந்து கிடந்தன. இப்படிப்பட்ட துடிப்புள்ள இளைஞர்களை தான் தேவன் தமக்கென தெரிந்து கொண்டு அவர்களைக் கொண்டு சரித்திரம் படைக்கிறார்.

1980-ம் ஆண்டு சேலம் டேனிஷ்பேட்டையில் நடைபெற்ற மாநில முகாமில் பங்கு பெற்ற ஜிம் எலியட் தன்னுடைய வாழ்க்கையை கிறிஸ்துவுக்கென அர்ப்பணித்தார். அங்கு அளிக்கப்பட்ட செய்தியின் மூலம் தேவன் அவரோடு இடைபட்டார். அந்த துருதுருவென விழித்த கண்களிலிருந்து கண்ணீர் தாரை தாரையாக வடிந்தது. தொண்டையில் இருந்து சத்தமும் சரியாக வரவில்லை. ஆனாலும் உதடுகள் முணுமுணுத்துக் கொண்டே இருந்தன. ஆனால் தான் எடுத்த தீர்மானத்தின் மனநிறைவினால் அவரது உள்ளத்தில் பெரும் சந்தோஷம் வந்தது. ''தேவனே என்னையும் ஒரு இரத்த சாட்சியாக்கும்" என்று அடிக்கடி ஜெபித்துக் கொண்டே இருந்தார். அன்றைய தினம் தேவனுடன் உடன்படிக்கை பண்ணிக் கொண்டார். அன்று முதல் சமுதாயத்தை அவர் பார்த்த விதம் மாறியது. அவரது சிந்திக்கும் சிந்தனைகள் மாற்றம் அடைந்தது. வட இந்தியாவில் காலரா, மலேரியா போன்ற உயிர் கொள்ளை நோய்களின் தாக்கம் அவரை அதிகம் பாதித்தது. சமூக நலன் படிப்பை படித்து முடித்த ஜிம் எலியட், இப்படி வியாதியால் சீர்குலைந்து வரும் சமுதாயத்தை மாற்ற வேண்டுமென அதிகம் பாரம் கொண்டார். தந்தை நண்பர் சுவிசேஷ ஜெபக்குழுவின் பொது காரியதரிசி என்ற பெரிய பொறுப்பில் இருந்த போதிலும், தன் மகனுக்கு பீஹார் மக்களின் நிலையை எடுத்துச் சொல்ல தவறியதில்லை. ஜிம் இம்மக்களைப் பற்றி அடிக்கடி தன் தகப்பனாரோடு பல மணி நேரங்கள் - பின் இரவு வரை விவாதிப்பார். முழு நேரமாக ஊழியம் செய்ய அடியெடுத்து வைத்தார். O.M என்ற ஊழியத்தோடு இணைந்து சிறிது காலம் பீஹாரிலுள்ள பர்கர்வானில் பணியாற்றினார். கல்லூரியில் அநேகருக்கு இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவை கொடுத்த அவரால் பீஹாரில் சும்மா இருக்க முடியவில்லை. ஒதுக்கப்பட்டவர்களுக்கும், உதவியற்றவர்களுக்கும், சிறுவர்களுக்கும் ஜிம் நெருங்கிய நண்பராக இருந்தார். இரவு - பகல் பாராது, மால்தோ சமுதாய மேம்பாட்டிற்காக உழைத்தார். தினமும் அதிகாலை 1 மணிக்குத்தான் தன் படுக்கைக்குச் செல்வார். ஆனாலும் தேவனுடன் செலவிட வேண்டிய நேரத்தை செலவிட அவர் ஒரு நாளும் தவறியதில்லை.

EFICOR என்ற சமுதாய மலர்ச்சிப்பணி நிறுவனத்துடன் இணைந்த ஜிம் எலியட், தன்னுடைய பணியை தொடர்ந்து செய்து வந்தார். மலேரியா மற்றும் காலரா நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட மக்களுக்கு எந்த நேரத்திலும் மருத்துவ உதவி செய்ய தயாராக இருந்தார். நடு இரவிலும்கூட உதவியோடு காத்திருக்கும் மக்களை சந்திக்கச் செல்வார். ஒரு முறை மிஷனெரி ஒருவர், ''கொள்ளைக்காரர்கள் மிகுந்த பாதை" என்று கூறி அவரைத் தடுத்தபோது, ஜிம் ''ஆண்டவர் சித்தமின்றி ஒன்றும் நடக்காது. எத்தனையோ மக்கள் ஆண்டவரை அறியாமல் மரித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர். எனவே நான் போக வேண்டும்" என்று பதிலளித்தார். மழை, சகதி என எதையும் பொருட்படுத்தாமல், பல மணி நேரங்கள் சகதியில் நடந்து சென்று காலரா நோயாளிகளை தூக்கிக் கொண்டு வருவார். தன்னுடையவைகள் அனைத்தையும் மற்றவர்களோடு பகிர்ந்து கொள்வதில் அதிக விருப்பம் கொள்வார். ஒரு முறை அவ்வாறு தன்னிடமிருந்த பணங்கள் அனைத்தையும் தேவையுள்ளவர்களுக்கு பகிர்ந்து கொடுத்து விட்டார். அவரிடமிருந்த கடைசி சோப்பும் முடிந்து விட்டது. ''தேவனே நீர் பார்த்துக் கொள்ளும்" என்று ஜெபித்து விட்டு தன் பணிக்கு சென்று விட்டார். சிறிது நேரத்தில் ஒருவர் ஜிம்மிடம் ஒரு புதிய சோப்பை கொடுத்து, ''இதில் முகம் கழுவு" என்றார். ஜிம் முகம் கழுவி விட்டு சோப்பை திரும்பக் கொடுத்தபோது ''இது உனக்குத் தான்" என்றார். ''இது என் வாழ்வில் நடந்த அற்பதம்" என ஜிம் கூறினார்.

ஒரு முறை மூளை காய்ச்சலில் சுய நினைவாற்றல் ஒருவரை தோளில் சுமந்து சென்ற நேரம் திடுக்கிடும் செய்தி ஒன்று அவருக்கு கிடைத்தது. ஜிம்மின் தாயார் மரணத்தருவாயில் இருக்கிறார் என்று செய்தி அவரை நிலைகுலையச் செய்தது. தன் தாயைப் பார்க்கப் புறப்படும் நேரம் வரை காலரா நோயாளிகளுக்கு உதவினார். சென்னை வந்து இறங்கிய பின், ஜிம்மின் உள்ளம் தன் தாயாருக்காக துடித்ததை விட, அழிந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் மால்தோ மக்களுக்காக அதிகம் துடித்தது. எனவே மறுபடியும் பர்கர்வாவிற்குப் புறப்பட்டுச் சென்ற ஜிம்மை அவர் தங்கை தடுத்தார். ''இங்கு ஒரு தாய் மரித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார். ஆனால் அங்கோ கொத்து கொத்தாக மால்தோ மக்கள் மரித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்" என்று கூறிச் சென்று விட்டார். அதன் பின்பு ஜிம் தன் தாயாரை சந்திக்கவே இல்லை.

நோய்களைப் பரப்பும் கொசுக்களை கட்டுப்படுத்த DDT தூவும் வேலையை 5 1/2 மாதங்களில் 295 ற்கும் மேற்பட்ட கிராமங்களில் செய்து முடித்தார். மால்தோ மனிதனின் முகத்தில் காணப்படும் கவலைக்கான காரணங்களை துருவி ஆராய வேண்டுமென அடிக்கடி கூறுவார். முதன் முதலில் மால்தோ மனிதனுக்கு மோட்டார் சைக்கிள் ஓட்ட கற்றுக் கொடுத்தவர் ஜிம் எலியட். ஜிம் தகப்பனார் பேட்ரிக் ஜாஷ்வா தன் மகனிடம் உன்னுடைய உடையை வைக்க "ஒரு பெட்டியை வாங்கிக் கொள்" என்று கூறியதற்கு ''எனக்கு அட்டைப் பெட்டி இருக்கிறது, போதும்" என்று கூறினார். ''ஒரு கட்டில் வாங்கிக் கொள் என்றதற்கு ''எனக்கு பாய் இருக்கிறது" என்று கூறி விட்டார். தனக்கென எதையும் வைத்துக் கொள்ளாத குணம் அவரிடம் உயர்ந்திருந்தது.

1994- ம் ஆண்டு பகாயாவில் மிஷனெரிகள் மற்றும் சுதேச ஊழியர்களுக்கென நடைபெற்ற சமுதாய மறுமலர்ச்சி கருத்தரங்கில் பயிற்சி அளிக்க ஜிம் கலந்து கொண்டார். 26.11.1994 அன்று துவங்கி நான்கு நாட்கள் காய்ச்சல் விட்டு விட்டு வந்தது. கருத்தரங்குகளில் பயிற்சியில் மும்முரமாக ஜிம் ஈடுபட்டதால் காய்ச்சலை பெரிதுபடுத்தவில்லை. ஆனால் 29- ம் நாள் அதிக பெலவீனம் அடைந்ததால் சாகிப்கஞ்ச் மருத்துவமனையில் சிகிச்சை எடுத்தார். பின் மருத்துவரின் ஆலோசனையின்படி, கல்கத்தாவிற்கு அன்றிரவே எடுத்துச் செல்லப்பட்டார். அவருடன் பெரிய நாயகம் என்ற ஊழியரும் சென்றார். காலை 7 மணிக்கு மருத்துவமனை அடைந்தனர். 8 மணிக்குத் தான் மருத்துவமனை திறக்கப்பட்டது. 8:30 மணிக்கு ஜிம் தன் தகப்பனாரை தொலைபேசியில் தொடர்பு கொண்டு பேச முயற்சித்தார். ஆனால் போன் பழுதடைந்ததால் அந்த முயற்சி தோற்றுப்போனது. நண்பர் சுவிசேஷ ஜெபக்குழுவின் தலைமைச் செயலகத்தை தொடர்பு கொண்டு தன் நிலையை கூறிவிட்டு, தன் தகப்பனிடம் சொல்ல கேட்டுக் கொண்டார். மருத்துவர்கள் உயிரைக் காப்பாற்ற தீவிரமாக முயற்சித்தனர். ஆனால் மதியம் 1:25 மணியளவில் அவரது உயிர் பிரிந்தது. மலேரியா தாக்கியதின் காரணமாக அவரது கணையம் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு மஞ்சள் காமாலையும், மூளைக் காய்ச்சலும் ஏற்பட்டது கண்டு பிடிக்கப்பட்டது. ஜிம்மிற்கு ஓய்வு தேவை என்று தீர்மானித்த தேவன், அவரை தன்னுடன் வைத்துக் கொள்ள அழைத்துக் கொண்டார். பின்னர் ஜிம் எலியட்டின் உடல் 3.12.1994 அன்று பர்கர்வாவிலுள்ள சி.என்.ஐ கல்லறை தோட்டத்தில் நல்லடக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டது. இந்த மரணம் தேவனால் அனுப்பப்பட்ட ஒரு மரணம் என்றும், மால்தோ மக்கள் மத்தியில் எங்கள் மகன் ஒரு ஜீவனுள்ள கோதுமை மணியாக விதைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறான் என்று அடக்க ஆராதனையில் சகோதரர் பேட்ரிக் ஜாஷ்வா தன் மகனைப் பற்றி கூறிப்பிட்டார்.

மால்தோ மக்கள் மட்டுமின்றி எண்ணற்ற சந்தாலி இன மக்களும் ஜிம் எலியட்டின் அடக்க ஆராதனையில் கலந்து கொண்டனர். அதுமட்டுமல்ல, பல்வேறு இயக்கத்தின் தலைவர்களும், மிஷனெரிகளும் கலந்து கொண்டனர். அவர்களில் ஒரு சிலரின் சாட்சிகள்....

ஒரு மால்தோ விசுவாசி: ''தாய் உயிருக்காக போராடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது எங்களைக் காப்பாற்றுவதை தன் கடமையாக ஏற்று எங்களிடம் வந்தார். எங்கள் வாழ்வை வளமாக்க தன் வாலிபத்தில் வீர மரணத்தை எங்களுக்காக ஏற்றுக் கொண்டார்" என்று கண்ணீர் விட்டு அழுதான்.

சகோதரர் கென்னடி: மால்தோ மக்களுக்காக தான் செத்து மடிவதனாலும் ஆயத்தம் என மனத் தெளிவோடிருந்தார். எதைக் கொடுக்க நினைத்தாரோ அதை கொடுத்து விட்டார்.

சகோதரர் சி.பி.சாமுவேல், EFICOR நிறுவன இயக்குனர்: கொப்பளிக்கும் உணர்வுகளின் தொகுப்பாக ஜிம் வாழ்ந்தார். மனிதர்களின் தேவையை ஆழமாகத் துருவி பார்த்தவர். விசுவாசத்தில் உறுதியாக இருந்தவர். எதற்காக தான் வாழ்கிறேன் என்பதற்கான காரணத்தை நன்கு அறிந்தவர்.

வாலிபத்தையும், வாலிபத்தின் அழகையும் மால்தோ மக்களுக்காய் கரைத்த ஜிம்மின் இடம் காலியாகி விட்டதை உணர்ந்த சந்தாலி விசுவாசிகள் ''ஜிம்மின் இடத்தை நாங்கள் நிரம்புவோம்" என்று அடக்க ஆராதனையில் தீர்மானம் எடுத்தனர். பலநூறு மால்தோ மக்கள் கண்ணீருடன் இந்த சேவைப்பணியை செய்ய அர்ப்பணித்தனர். கோதுமை மணியாக விதைக்கப்பட்ட ஜிம் எலியட் மூலம் இன்று பெருத்த அறுவடை மால்தோ, சந்தாலி சமுதாயத்தில் ஏற்பட்டு வருகிறது. தன்னால் இழக்கக் கூடாத ஒன்றை ஆதாயப்படுத்திக் கொள்வதற்காக, தன்னால் தக்க வைத்துக் கொள்ள முடியாத ஒன்றை இழக்கக் கொடுப்பவன் முட்டாள் அல்ல என்று எக்வேடார் மிஷனெரி ஜிம் எலியட் கூறியுள்ளார். ஆம், தற்காலிகமானதை விட்டுக் கொடுத்து நித்தியமானதை தெரிந்தெடுப்பது இழப்பு அல்ல. இன்று தற்காலிகமானதை இழக்க நீங்கள் தயாரா?

Whether it is cross-cultural missionary work carried out in a distant land or the ministry of sharing the love of Jesus Christ with those living nearby, the Church urgently needs the strong shoulders of young people for both. Jim Elliot was a young man of vision who offered himself as a grain of wheat to bring transformation to the Malto community, a people who were gradually facing decline. Even today, we can see the fruit of his sacrifice among the Malto people in the hills.

Jim Elliot was the second son of pioneer missionary Brother Patrick Joshua and Sister Sushila Patrick. His parents named him Jim Elliot after the American missionary Jim Elliot, who gave his life as a martyr while seeking to proclaim the Gospel among the Auca people of Ecuador. The young Jim Elliot grew up with the lively mischief characteristic of a boy, an adventurous spirit that made him eager to climb anything from a tree to a mountain, an energetic and exuberant personality, a passion for learning new things, and an inquisitive mind that wanted to investigate everything deeply.

People of every age group were naturally drawn to him and were often found around him. He studied at Matthias Higher Secondary School, St. Paul's Higher Secondary School, Madras Christian College, and Sacred Heart College, and eventually earned a Master's degree in Social Work (MSW). He was very different from his siblings—in his character, habits, ability to attract and influence others, and in the way he formed friendships. Many gifts and abilities lay hidden within him.

It is precisely such energetic young people whom God chooses for Himself and through whom He writes chapters of history.

A Life Surrendered to Christ:

In 1980, Jim Elliot participated in a state camp held at Danishpet, Salem. It was there that he surrendered his life completely to Christ. God spoke deeply to him through the message that was preached at the camp.

Tears streamed down from his wide-open eyes. His voice was choked with emotion and he could hardly speak. Yet his lips continued to whisper. Although he was overwhelmed with emotion, his heart was filled with great joy and satisfaction because of the decision he had made.

He frequently prayed, “Lord, make me a martyr for You.” That day, he entered into a covenant with God. From that moment onward, the way he looked at society began to change. His thoughts and perspectives were transformed.

The devastating impact of diseases such as cholera and malaria in North India deeply affected him. Having completed his studies in social work, Jim became increasingly burdened to bring transformation to communities devastated by disease and poverty.

Although his father, Patrick Joshua, was serving in a major leadership role as the General Secretary of the Friends Missionary Prayer Band, he never failed to tell his son about the desperate condition of the people of Bihar. Jim would often spend long hours discussing these people with his father, sometimes late into the night.

Eventually, Jim took the step of entering full-time ministry. He joined OM (Operation Mobilisation) and served for some time in Barkarwa, Bihar. Having introduced many people to Jesus Christ while he was in college, Jim could not remain indifferent to the spiritual and physical needs he encountered in Bihar.

He became a close friend to the neglected, the helpless, and the children. Day and night, he worked tirelessly for the development and welfare of the Malto community. He often went to bed only at one o’clock in the morning. Yet, even with his demanding schedule, he never failed to set aside time to spend with God.

A Servant to the Malto People:

Jim Elliot later joined EFICOR, an organisation committed to community development, and continued his work among the people. He was always ready to provide medical assistance to those suffering from malaria and cholera. Even in the middle of the night, he would go to meet people who were waiting for help.

On one occasion, a missionary tried to stop him, warning him that the road he was about to take was infested with robbers. Jim replied: “Nothing can happen apart from the will of the Lord. So many people are dying without knowing the Lord. Therefore, I must go.”

He did not allow rain, mud, or difficult roads to stop him. He would walk for hours through muddy paths and carry cholera patients to places where they could receive help.

Jim had a deep desire to share everything he possessed with others. On one occasion, he gave away all the money he had to people in need. Eventually, even the last bar of soap he possessed was gone. He simply prayed, “Lord, You take care of it,” and went about his work. A short while later, someone came to Jim and gave him a new bar of soap, saying, “Use this to wash your face.”

After washing his face, Jim tried to return the soap. But the man said, “This is for you.” Jim later described it as “a miracle that happened in my life.”

A Burden Greater Than His Own Life:

On one occasion, while carrying on his shoulder a person who had lost consciousness because of cerebral fever, Jim received shocking news: his mother was critically ill and near death. The news deeply disturbed him. Yet, until the time came for him to leave to see his mother, he continued helping cholera patients.

After arriving in Chennai, Jim's heart was naturally concerned about his dying mother. Yet an even greater burden was burning within him—the plight of the Malto people who were dying in large numbers. Therefore, Jim decided to return to Barkarwa. His sister tried to stop him.

He replied: “Here, one mother is dying. But there, Malto people are dying in large numbers.” With those words, he left. Sadly, he never saw his mother again.

A Life of Sacrifice:

In an effort to control the mosquitoes that spread disease, Jim completed the work of spraying DDT in more than 295 villages within five and a half months. He often said that he wanted to investigate deeply the reasons behind the sorrow and anxiety reflected on the faces of the Malto people.

Jim Elliot was also the first person to teach a Malto man how to ride a motorcycle. His father, Patrick Joshua, once advised him, “Buy a suitcase to keep your clothes in.” Jim replied, “I have a cardboard box. That is enough.” When his father suggested that he buy a bed, Jim replied, “I have a mat. That is enough.” He had developed a remarkable habit of possessing very little for himself. He did not desire material comforts or personal possessions.

His Final Days:

In 1994, Jim participated in a community development seminar held at Bhagaya for missionaries and indigenous workers. He was there to provide training.

The seminar began on 26 November 1994. For four days, Jim experienced intermittent fever. Because he was deeply involved in the training sessions and seminars, he did not take the fever seriously.

However, on the 29th, he became extremely weak and sought treatment at Sahibganj Hospital. Following the doctor's advice, he was taken to Calcutta that very night. A fellow worker named Periyanayagam accompanied him.

They reached the hospital at 7:00 a.m., but the hospital opened only at 8:00 a.m. At around 8:30 a.m., Jim tried to contact his father by telephone. However, the telephone was not functioning, and he was unable to speak with him.

He then contacted the headquarters of the FMPB and informed them about his condition, asking them to convey the news to his father. 

The doctors made every possible effort to save his life. But at approximately 1:25 p.m., Jim breathed his last. It was discovered that malaria had affected his pancreas and resulted in jaundice and cerebral fever. God, who had determined that Jim needed rest, called him home to be with Him.

Jim Elliot's body was later laid to rest on 3 December 1994 in the CNI cemetery at Barkarwa. At the funeral service, his father, Brother Patrick Joshua, spoke of his son: “This death was a death sent by God. Our son has been sown like a living grain of wheat among the Malto people.” “We Will Fill Jim's Place” Not only Malto people but also many members of the Santhali community attended Jim Elliot's funeral service. Leaders from various movements and numerous missionaries were also present.

Some of them shared their testimonies.

A Malto Believer:

One Malto believer wept as he said: “While his own mother was fighting for her life, he considered it his duty to come and save us. He gave his young life for us so that our lives might be enriched.”

Brother Kennedy:

Brother Kennedy testified that Jim was fully prepared, with complete peace of mind, to lay down his life for the Malto people. He had given everything he had determined to give.

"Jim lived as a bundle of overflowing emotions. He looked deeply into the needs of people. He was firm in his faith and clearly understood the reason for which he was living.”

The Santhali believers deeply felt the emptiness left by Jim, who had poured out his youth and the beauty of his young life for the Malto people. 

At the funeral service, they made a solemn commitment: “We will fill Jim's place.” Hundreds of Malto people, with tears in their eyes, dedicated themselves to continuing the work of service among their people.
