The Lewis Revival லூயிஸ் எழுப்புதல்

 

 ஹெபிரிட்ஸ் தீவுகள் என்பது ஸ்காட்லாந்தின் வடமேற்கு கடற்கரைக்கு அருகில் உள்ள 100-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட தீவுகளின் தொகுப்பு. அவற்றில் மிகப்பெரிய தீவு லூயிஸ் மற்றும் ஹாரிஸ். 1949-ம் ஆண்டு அந்த தீவில் சுமார் 25000 மக்கள் வாழ்ந்தனர். அங்கு அழகான புல் கூரையுடைய குடிசைகள், நெசவுத்தொழில் மற்றும் ஏராளமான திருச்சபைகளும் இருந்தன. ஆனால் திருச்சபைகளின் நிலைமை பரிதாபமாக இருந்தது. ஜெபமும் வேதவாசிப்பும் சடங்காச்சாரமாக மாறியது. இளைஞர்கள் திருச்சபைகளை விட்டு விலகி, நடன அரங்குகள், சினிமா கூடங்கள், மதுபானக் கடைகள் போன்றவற்றை நோக்கிச் சென்றனர். கிறிஸ்துவுக்கும் சபைகளுக்கும் தொடர்பில்லாததால், சபை குளிர்ந்து போன நிலையில் இருந்தது.  

         இப்படிப்பட்ட காலங்களில் பெக்கி ஸ்மித் மற்றும் கிறிஸ்டின் ஸ்மித் என்ற இரண்டு சகோதரிகள் பார்விஸ் என்ற கிராமத்தில் ஒரு சிறிய குடிசையில் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். 84 வயதான பெக்கி கண் பார்வையற்றவர், அவரது சகோதரி கிறிஸ்டின் 82 வயது நிரம்பியவர். கடுமையான வாத நோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டதால், கூன் விழுந்த நிலைமையில் வாழ்ந்தார். அவர்கள் இருவரும் திருச்சபைக்குச் செல்ல முடியாததால் தங்கள் வீட்டையே ஜெபகௌ குடிலாக மாற்றினார்கள். இருவரும் பல மணி நேரங்களில் தங்கள் முழங்கால்களில் நின்று தங்கள் தீவு மக்களுக்காக கதறினார்கள். இருவராலும் வெளியே நடப்பதைப் பற்றி காண முடியவில்லை என்றாலும், தேவன் அவர்களின் ஆவிக்குரிய கண்களால் அனைத்தையும் காண கிருபை செய்தார். ஒரு நாள் ஜெபிக்கும் போது, பெக்கி ஒரு தரிசனம் கண்டார். அத்தீவின் திருச்சபைகள் இளைஞர்களால் நிரம்பியிருப்பதையும், இதுவரை அவர் அறியாத போதகர் ஒருவர் பிரசிங்கிப்பதையும் கண்டார். அப்பொழுது "தாகமுள்ளவன் மேல் தண்ணீரையும், வறண்டு நிலத்தின் மேல் ஆறுகளையும் ஊற்றுவேன்" (ஏசாயா 44:3) என்ற வசனம் ஒலித்தது. அன்று முதல், தேவன் லூயிஸ் தீவின் மேல் தமது ஆவியை ஊற்ற ஜெபித்து வந்தனர்.

              அப்பகுதியில் ஊழியம் செய்து வந்த திருச்சபையின் போதகர் ஜேம்ஸ் மெக்கீயை இருவரும் அழைத்தனர். போதகர் இரு பெலவீனமான பெண்களை பார்க்கச். செல்வதாக நினைத்து சென்றார். ஆனால் இரு பெண்மணிகளும் சரீரத்தில் பெலவீனமாய் இருந்தார்களே தவிர, கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் பெலவான்களாய் காணப்பட்டனர். இருவரையும் "ஆவிக்குரிய இராட்சதர்கள்" என்று போதகர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். இரு அம்மையார்களும் போதகரோடு லூயிஸ் தீவு மக்களின் நிலைமையைப் பற்றி பல மணி நேரங்கள் பேசினார்கள். கடைசியில், வாரத்திற்கு இரண்டு இரவுகள் முழுவதும் ஜெபிக்க சபை மூப்பர்களை அழைக்கலாமே? என்று போதகரிடம் கேள்வி எழுப்பினார்கள். அவர்கள் பேசிய ஒவ்வொரு வார்த்தைகளும் போதகரை அதிர வைத்தது. அன்று முதல் செவ்வாய் மற்றும் வெள்ளிக்கிழமைகளில் இரவு 10 மணி முதல் அதிகாலை 4 மணி வரை ஜெபக்கூட்டங்கள் தொடங்கின. ஆண்கள் ஓரிடத்தில் கூடி ஜெபித்த அதே நேரத்தில், பெக்கி மற்றும் கிறிஸ்டின் தங்கள் குடிலில் ஜெபித்தனர். பல மாதங்கள் இப்படியே நடந்தது. தேவன் கிரியை செய்ய ஆரம்பித்தார். ஒரு நாள் இரவு நேரத்தில் இளைஞன் ஒருவன் சங்கீதம் 24 -ஐ வாசித்தான். "யார் கர்த்தருடைய பர்வதத்தில் ஏறுவான்?...... கைகளில் சுத்தமுள்ளவனும், இருதயத்தில் மாசில்லாதவனுமாயிருந்து..." என்று வாசிக்கும் போது, முழங்கால் படியிட்டும், கீழே விழுந்தும், "தேவனே என் கைகள் சுத்தமானதா" என்று கதறி ஜெபித்தான். "நாம் தேவனோடு சரியான உறவில் இல்லாமல் ஜெபிப்பதெல்லாம் வெறும் நாடகம்" என்று திருச்சபையில் கூடியிருந்த அனைவரிடமும் கூறினான். அன்றிரவே, லூயிஸ் தீவில் எழுப்புதல் ஆரம்பமானது.  

  மக்கள் திடீரென்று தேவனுடைய பிரசன்னத்தை உணர ஆரம்பித்தனர். வீடுகளில், வயல்களில், தெருக்களில் என மக்கள் ஒருவரையொருவர் சந்திக்கும் இடங்களிலெல்லாம் தேவனைப் பற்றி பேச ஆரம்பித்தனர். சில நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு பெக்கி ஸ்மித் அம்மையார், டங்கன் கேம்பல் என்ற பிரசங்கியாரை லூயிஸ் தீவு மக்களிடம் பிரசங்கிக்க, போதகரை அழைக்கச் சொன்னார். டங்கன் கேம்பல் ஒரு மிகச்சிறந்த எழுப்புதல் பிரசங்கியார். அவர் மூலமாக தேவன் அன்றைய காலங்களில் உலகளவில் பெரிய காரியங்களைச் செய்து வந்தார். சிறிதளவும் ஓய்வின்றி கடினமாக தேவனுக்காக ஊழியம் செய்து வந்தார். அதனால் லூயிஸ் தீவிற்கு அவர் வருவது கடினம் என்று போதகர் மெக்கீ கூறினார். பெக்கி அம்மையாரோ, "அவர் இரண்டு வாரங்களுக்குள் இங்கே இருப்பார் என தேவன் கூறுகிறார்" என்றார். அப்படியே நடந்தது. டங்கன் கேம்பல் மற்றொரு இடத்திற்கு ஊழியத்திற்காக செல்லும்போது, தேவன் தடுத்து விட்டு, லூயிஸ் தீவிற்கு செல்ல அவரைத் தீவிரப்படுத்தினார். லூயிஸ் தீவிற்குள் வந்த அன்றிரவு அவர் பிரசங்கம் செய்த போது சுமார் 300 மக்கள் கூடியிருந்தனர். கூட்டம் முடியும் நேரம் வந்தது. இளைஞன் ஒருவன் "தேவனே தாகமாயிருக்கிறவர் மேல் நீர் ஆவியை ஊற்றுவேன் என்று சொன்னதை இன்னும் செய்யவில்லையே" என்று தரையில் விழுந்து ஜெபித்தான். சபையின் கதவைத் திறந்தபோது, இரவு 11 மணியளவில் சுமார் 700 பேர் வெளியே காத்திருந்தனர். அருகிலிருந்த கேளிக்கை இடங்களில் நடனமாடிக் கொண்டிருந்த இளைஞர்கள் மீது தேவ ஆவியானவர் ஊற்றப்பட்டார். அவர்கள் பாவ உணர்வடைந்து திருச்சபையை நோக்கி ஓடி வந்தனர். அந்தக் கூட்டம் காலை 4 மணி வரை நீடித்தது. அதைத் தொடர்ந்து பல அற்புதங்கள் நடைபெற்றது. பிரிந்திருந்த குடும்பங்கள் ஒன்றிணைந்தன; மதுபானக் கடைகள் மூடப்பட்டது. பெருமையோடு வாழ்ந்து வந்தவர்கள் தங்களைத் தாழ்த்தி ஜெபித்தனர். இசைக்கருவிகள் ஏதுமின்றி, ஜனங்கள் பல மணி நேரங்கள் தேவனை ஆராதித்தனர். வயல்கள், சாலையோரங்கள், வீடுகள் என அனைத்து இடங்களிலும் தேவனைத் தேடினார்கள். ஆவியானவரும் பலமாக ஊற்றப்பட்டார். 

          பெக்கி மற்றும் கிறிஸ்டின் அம்மையார் இருவரையும் ஊழியர் டங்கன் கேம்பல் அடிக்கடி சந்தித்தார். லூயிஸ் தீவில் தேவன் செய்து வரும் மகத்தான கிரியைகளை டங்கன் அவர்களுக்கு அம்மையார் இருவரும் கூறிவந்தனர். பெக்கி அம்மையார் கண் பார்வை இல்லாத போதிலும், அவரது ஆவிக்குரிய கண்களால் லூயிஸ் தீவின் எழுப்புதலை காண முடிந்தது. வெளியே நடந்து செல்ல முடியாமல் கூனியாக இருந்த கிறிஸ்டின் அம்மையாரால் கிறிஸ்துவின் செயலை உறுதியிட்டு கூற முடிந்தது. இருவரும் மக்களின் ஆதரவையோ அங்கீகாரத்தையோ எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை. திருச்சபைகளில் பிரசங்கம் செய்யவும் விரும்பவில்லை. திரைமறைவில் லூயிஸ் தீவின் எழுப்புதலுக்காக தேவபாதம் அமர்வதையே விரும்பினார்கள். "தேவன் இதையே வாக்கு பண்ணினார்" என்று உறுதியிட்டு கூறினார்கள். டங்கன் கேம்பல் "இந்த எழுப்புதல் முடிவல்ல; இது ஒரு சாதாரண துவக்கம்" என்று கூறினார். ஆம், இந்த எழுப்புதலின் விளைவாக, இளைஞர்கள் வைராக்கியமாக எழும்பினார்கள். சுவிசேஷம் என்னும் தீபம் லூயிஸ் தீவில் மட்டும் ஏற்றப்படக் கூடியது அல்ல; அருகிலுள்ள தீவுகளிலும் இது பற்றி எரிய வேண்டும் என சிதறி சென்றார்கள். ஒரு திருச்சபைக்குள்... ஒரு சந்ததிக்குள்.... என நின்றுவிடாமல் தொடர்ச்சியாக, தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக கடத்திச் செல்லப்பட்டது. பெரிய விளைவுகள் இதன் மூலம் உண்டானது. ஒவ்வொரு வாரமும் ஆலயங்கள் நிரம்பியது. இளைஞர்கள் தங்கள் கரங்களில் வேதத்தை ஏந்தி, ஆலயத்தின் முன் வரிசையில் அமர்ந்து தேவனிடம் தங்களை அர்ப்பணித்தார்கள். இம்மிகப்பெரிய எழுப்புதலை ஆரம்பித்ததும், தாங்கியதும், வளர்த்ததும் ஜெபமே. அதற்கு மையமாக இருந்தவர்கள் பெக்கி ஸ்மித் மற்றும் கிறிஸ்டின் ஸ்மித் அம்மையர்களே. அவர்களிடம் மேடை இல்லை; புகழ் இல்லை; இசைக்குழு இல்லை. ஆனால் முழங்கால்கள் இருந்தது. தேவன் அவற்றைக் கொண்டு ஸ்காட்லாந்து தேசத்தையே அசைத்தார். 

  ஜெபம் இல்லை என்றால் பரிசுத்தமுமில்லை, எழுப்புதலும் இல்லை. இன்றும் தேவன் பெக்கி மற்றும் கிறிஸ்டின் அம்மையாரைப் போல, இரவெல்லாம் ஜெபிக்கிறவர்களைத் தேடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார். உங்கள் வீடு ஒரு ஜெபக்குடிலாக மாறுமா? உங்கள் திருச்சபை ஜெபப் பட்டறையாக மாறுமா?

        அப் 2:42 - அவர்கள் அப்போஸ்தலருடைய உபதேசத்திலும், அந்நியோந்நியத்திலும், அப்பம் பிட்குதலிலும், ஜெபம் பண்ணுதலிலும் உறுதியாய்த் தரித்திருந்தார்கள். இப்படிப்பட்டவர்களுக்காக தேவன் காத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார். நம்முடைய பதில் என்ன?

The Hebrides Islands were a chain of more than one hundred islands lying off the northwest coast of Scotland. Among them, the largest island was the Lewis and Harris. In 1949, nearly 25,000 people lived there. The island was known for its beautiful grass-roofed cottages, weaving industry, and numerous churches. Yet beneath its peaceful appearance, the spiritual condition of the churches had grown weak and lifeless. Prayer and Bible reading had become little more than religious routines. Young people drifted away from the churches and were drawn to dance halls, cinemas, and drinking houses. Many had lost their true relationship with Christ.

During this time, two elderly sisters, Peggy Smith and Christine Smith, lived in a small cottage in the village of Barvas. Peggy, aged 84, was completely blind, while her sister Christine, aged 82, suffered severely from arthritis and could barely walk. Though they were unable to attend church, they transformed their home into a house of prayer.

They spent hours kneeling before God, crying out for mercy upon their island. Though Peggy could not see with her natural eyes and Christine could hardly move, God opened their spiritual eyes to the desperate condition of their people.

One day, while praying, Peggy received a vision. She saw churches across the island overflowing with young people. She also saw a preacher whom she did not recognize standing and proclaiming the Word of God.

At that moment, she heard a verse in her heart:

“I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground.” — Isaiah 44:3

From that day onward, the sisters prayed with faith that God would pour out His Spirit upon the Lewis.

Pastor James MacKay was ministering in that region. The sisters invited him to visit their cottage. He initially assumed he was going to encourage two weak, elderly women. However, though frail in body, they were strong in spirit. Pastor MacKay later described them as “Spiritual Giants.”

For hours, the sisters spoke with him about the spiritual condition of the people in Lewis. Finally, they asked him a simple yet powerful question:

“Why not gather the church elders together to pray through the night twice every week?”

From that day, prayer meetings began every Tuesday and Friday night from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. While groups of men gathered to pray in one place, Peggy and Christine continued praying from their cottage. This continued for several months.

One night, during a prayer gathering, a young man read from Psalm 24:

“Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?... He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart.”

As he read, the young man dropped to his knees and cried out:

“God, are my hands clean? Is my heart pure?”

Then he turned to those gathered and declared:

“All our gatherings are nothing but a mere performance if we are not right with God.”

That very night, revival broke out on the Isle of Lewis.

The presence of God swept across the island. Men and women who had no interest in church suddenly felt compelled to seek the Lord.

A few days later, Peggy Smith urged Pastor MacKay to invite Duncan Campbell to preach on the island. Duncan Campbell was a well-known revival preacher. Because of his demanding ministry schedule, Pastor MacKay believed it would be impossible for him to come.

But Peggy replied: “God has said he will be here within two weeks."

Exactly as she believed, it happened.

While preparing to minister elsewhere, Duncan Campbell felt the unmistakable leading of the Holy Spirit directing him instead to the Isle of Lewis.

On the very first night he preached and around 300 people gathered. As the meeting was drawing to a close, a young man fell to the floor, crying: “Lord, You promised to pour water upon the thirsty, yet You have not fulfilled Your promise!”

When the church doors opened nearly 700 people were standing outside.

Many of them present in the nearby dance halls and entertainment centers, suddenly felt the Spirit of God convict them of their sin. Without any delay, they left those places and hurried to the church in search of God.

The prayer continued until four o’clock in the morning.From that moment onward, extraordinary things began to happen throughout the island.

Broken families restored. Liquor shops shut down. People gathered to worship God for hours without instruments. 

In fields, along roadsides, and inside homes, people cried out to God. The Holy Spirit was poured out with unusual power.

Duncan Campbell frequently visited Peggy and Christine Smith during the revival. Though Peggy remained blind, she clearly perceived the mighty work of God through spiritual vision. Though Christine could hardly walk, she testified boldly about what Christ was doing.

Neither of them sought recognition, applause, or public ministry. Their only desire was to remain hidden before God in prayer.

Again and again, they declared: “God promised this.”

Duncan Campbell later said: “This revival is not the end. It is only the beginning.” And indeed, it was. Young people rose with a burning passion for God. The fire of the Gospel spread beyond Lewis into the neighboring islands. Revival moved from church to church and from generation to generation. Churches were full every week. Young people sat in the front rows of churches with their Bibles and surrendered their lives completely to God.

Prayer was the foundation that birthed, sustained, and strengthened the Lewis Revival. At the center of that movement stood two women—Peggy Smith and Christine Smith.

They had no stage, no fame, and no worldly influence, but they had knees that bowed before God. And through those prayers, God shook the nation of Scotland. Without prayer, there can be no holiness and no revival.

Even today, God is searching for people like Peggy and Christine Smith—people willing to pray through the night.

Will your home become a house of prayer? Will your church become a place of intercession? Acts 2:42 “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

God is still waiting for such people.
