A sudden shocking news awaited the 14th Battalion of the Roman Regiment. It was from Emperor Lucinius who ordered everyone to prostrate before his gods and worship them. In the 14th Battalion were 40 soldiers who were Christians. They were staunch that they worshipped Christ Jesus alone and they would never prostrate before statues. In spite of all the threats, they refused. This happened in 320 AD. It was a bitterly cold season. They were punished and forced to stand naked on the frozen river.
They were given a chance to reconsider their decision to escape punishment by bowing down to the idols or die stark naked in a cold unforgiving river. These were the two options laid before them. With unflinching manhood, the 40 Christian warriors sang songs of praises in the cold. They were not cowardly to betray Christ their Savior.
At midnight, one soldier after another suffered and died in the bitter cold. Of the 40 soldiers, one comrade was still alive and saw how cruelly his friends died. Though he entered the water, he waded back to the bank betraying his belief in Christ. He was ready to give up his faith for the comforts of living.
Seeing the entire scene unfold before him, the Commander saw the bravery of 39 soldiers, who dared not to think a minute to save their lives but held their faith. Just then, he removed his weaponry and clothes; decided to die as a Christian, though it was but a day to hold his faith rather than to live forever as a heathen.
The day dawned and 40 corpes were floating on the freezing river.
1. Do we ever question ourselves what we would do if we were in such a compelling circumstance?
2. There is a saying that “Death is a bed of roses for the brave”. Will that be our proclamation too?
3. This is the question before you and me. And no one else can answer that except you and me? Will we?
